Spiritual Awakening Quiz: Are You Awakened?
Written by Kirsti Formoso, MSc. Transpersonal Psychology, BSc. Psychology
How do you know if you are spiritually awakened or even if you're heading in the right direction? This research-backed spiritual awakening test will help you understand your spiritual journey, determine what stage you're at and offer guidance for a healthy, balanced spiritual growth based on your results.
The spiritual awakening journey is full of mystery. From ethereal concepts about energy, chakras, spiritual guides, and enlightenment to spiritual experiences such as synchronicity, trance, meditative states, and other EHEs. It can be confusing, so if you haven’t already read my spiritual awakening page, take a look; it should give you a much broader perspective than what you’ll find here.
Because this page is about you! It’s about understanding where exactly you are on the spiritual awakening journey.
For me, one of the biggest mysteries was where I fit in all of it, and whether I was even getting anywhere from all the spiritual practices and hard work. Doing a self-reflection quiz like this can help us explore our inner world, expand our awareness, and connect with our inner guidance.
THE SPIRITUAL AWAKENING TEST
This test has been developed from a combination of research, theory, spiritual teachings and personal experience. While it should develop meaningful results for you, keep in mind that you are always evolving, and it's a tool with limitations. The spiritual world can be difficult to put into words and categories.
With that said, are you ready to find out what your spiritual level is? If you're ready to find out more about where you are on your spiritual journey, click the orange button below. The test is free, and you'll get your results instantly.
DOUBT ON THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY
The spiritual awakening journey is a lifelong journey. It's long, it's not easy, and it's not straightforward. I had been on my journey for over twenty years before I had significant breakthroughs. In those 20 years, I flip-flopped between psychological work and spiritual practices. I worked on myself while I searched for something greater, what exactly, at the time, I couldn't articulate.
There were many times I wondered if I was barking up the wrong tree and wasting time. After a period of focusing on psychological work, I would feel like I'd wasted my time and turn to more spiritual practices. Along the journey, at ashrams, I was told the goal was enlightenment, but you'll never reach it. Was it all a waste of time? While it all felt a bit futile, something deeper in me wouldn't let me stop the search.
What I'm trying to say is that there was a lot of doubt over those 20 years, and I had no way of telling whether my efforts were in vain or whether I was actually getting somewhere. I guess about 10 years in, having frequented many ashrams, silent retreats, psychic and mediumship retreats and poured out my heart over many journals, workshops and spiritual circles, I started to have small breakthroughs, what I called mini revelations.
It came to me that spiritual awakening happens through insight, many little revelations that slowly shift your perspective on life. But even so, transformation was slow. Until seven years ago, when I had a moment of spiritual height and six months later a profound breakthrough. I found what I was looking for.
But I still had questions. And I was not finding the answers in books or scriptures. So, I turned to the most unexpected of places -academia.
THE PSYCHOLOGY OF AWAKENING
I started with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, where I studied developmental psychology, the psychology of the extraordinary, and survey-based methodology. Nexed, I did a Master of Science in Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology and learnt about spiritual development and growth.
Through my six years of study, I conducted several research projects on spiritual awakening. Both my dissertations were on spiritual awakening and were questionnaire-based. For my MSc, I created a new scale to measure mystical experiences, the scientific term for a specific type of spiritual awakening. I designed this questionnaire, the Spiritual Awakening Test, based on transpersonal research and theory in spiritual development.

THE CHALLENGES OF MEASURING SPIRITUALITY
There are many spiritual awakening tests online, but they seem to have little basis in scientific research, and scoring seems rudimentary at best. These pop-psychology spiritual assessments include questions about intuition, personal growth, and self-reflection. But they fall far short of discerning people's real awakening stage.
Take measuring intuition as an example. It is not that there is anything inherently wrong with recognising intuition. Intuitive knowing can be deeply valuable. The difficulty is that the mind is subtle and easily self-deceiving. Psychologists know that what feels like intuition can just as easily be fear, projection, conditioning, or desire. And transpersonal psychologists know that this is not a proxy for spiritual awakening. For this reason, asking people how much they rely on intuition and using that as a measure of spiritual awakening is unlikely to provide a reliable assessment and could do more harm than good.
DEVELOPING THE SPIRITUAL AWAKENING TEST
In developing this quiz, as a transpersonal psychologist, I have tried to ensure that it actually does measure spiritual development. Because there's a world of difference between someone who likes having a spiritual identity and someone who is committed to real transformation and truth. Most tests don't distinguish between the two.
Unlike generic "stages" quizzes, this short quiz focuses on cumulative depth and current trait-level awakeness because spiritual awakening evolves in cycles, at ever-deeper layers. It's a non-linear, cyclical unfolding where glimpses of deeper reality intensify, profound experiences can last months or years, and everyday awareness shifts toward unity, presence, and boundless compassion.
This spiritual awakening quiz is rooted in transpersonal research and theory in spiritual development and self-transcendence. The design is rigorous. The scoring is set up to ensure that you get a good and reliable answer to your question: Am I spiritually awakened?
I believe that this is the most accurate spiritual awakening quiz out there! Not because I'm biased, but because I set out with integrity to design it that way. I wanted to offer people a spiritual awakening quiz that really did help them reflect on their journey, understand their spiritual level, validate the stage they're at, and offer practical solutions for daily life to move them forward on their spiritual path. I've stress tested it for all the stages of spiritual awakening and all sorts of highlights and pitfalls along the way.
I'd love to hear your feedback, so please do let me know if you felt it was accurate and resonated with where you're at. You can use the comment section below or pm me. SPIRITUAL AWAKENING AS A PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTAL PATH
In psychology, it is widely accepted that human development can continue throughout adulthood. From this perspective, growth does not stop once we reach a certain age. It unfolds across our lifespan. Within transpersonal psychology, spiritual awakening is therefore not treated as an unattainable ideal or a vague and fluffy ethereal destination. It is understood as a developmental path.
In this light, the spiritual awakening journey is not about becoming something special. It is about returning to a more fundamental and enduring aspect of ourselves, with greater clarity and psychological integration. It involves a shift from temporary states of insight or unity to more stable traits of awareness, transcendence, and embodiment. Rather than chasing peak experiences, the focus becomes the gradual stabilisation of insight in everyday life.
Seen this way, awakening is not a single event but an ongoing process. It is a lifelong unfolding that requires persistence, humility, and patience.
THE SCIENTIFIC THEORY BEHIND THE SPIRITUAL AWAKENING TEST
In developing this test, I have drawn on my own understanding, having walked the spiritual path for many years, feeling like I was going round in circles. My most profound spiritual experience lasted for more than a year and enabled me to watch the ego at play, observe the juxtaposition of the absolute and the relative, and navigate the challenges of integration.
I combine my own experiential understanding with my learning from scriptures, other spiritual teachers and a broad spectrum of research and theory. Examples of theory and research that I have drawn from for the quiz are:
Exceptional Human Experiences frameworks (Rhea White & Suzanne Brown).
Integral Theory and Stage Progression Theory: Waking up, growing up, and non-dual realisation (Ken Wilber).
Maslow's expanded hierarchy of self-transcendence as the peak, with "transcenders" motivated by cosmic unity and service (Koltko-Rivera, 2006).
Nurse theorist Pamela Reed's work on self-transcendence (Khait, Sabo, & Shellman, 2020).
Mystical experiences research (Formoso, 2023; Griffiths et al., 2008).

SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE
Is This Awakening or Something Else? If you have ever wondered how deeply "awake" you truly are, this free Spiritual Awakening Depth Test (23 thoughtful questions, ~5–8 minutes) helps you explore exactly that. Drawing from transpersonal psychology and real-world research, it assesses:
Early realisations of conditioned life and the "illusion" of separation (piercing Maya).
Growing engagement with practices and intensifying exceptional human experiences (EHEs like synchronicities, intuition, empathy).
Moments of ego witnessing, dissolution, and non-dual glimpses.
Profound mystical or spontaneous spiritual awakenings (with emphasis on duration and persistence, per studies like Corneille & Luke 2021 and Formoso 2023).
Stable, trait-level integration—enduring self-transcendence, awe in the mundane, and eudaimonic well-being.
At the end of the test, you’ll get your results with insights about your stage, guidance for navigating your stage without wasting time and free resources.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM SPIRITUALLY AWAKENED?
Knowing what stage of spiritual awakening you're at can be really powerful. If we're just starting out it helps us to know that we're not going mad, or having some kind of mental breakdown. When we've been on the path for a while, it gives us validation for all the hard work we've put in. If we're feeling lost or at a plateau, we can re-find our path and inspiration. And if it's all gone a bit downhill, or chaotic, we can be reassured, knowing that sometimes the path is challenging and can even look like we've fallen off it.
